Shia's Healthy New Lifestyle Day 28

Healthy Endings

I am saying goodbye to Facebook. I've never really been someone 100% involved in it anyways. I really don't want the 20 invites a day to join stupid applications, etc. Also, minus a few friends (Betsy and Taller of course), most of the people that I've befriended aren't my actual friends. Most of them are typical annoying people from high school that I really don't care to be friends with now. Also, because of these "friends" I feel like I am in high school still. Hello that was FOREVER ago! So I've decided, after receiving that someone from high school answered a question about me and seeing the answer, to take myself out of this childish scenario and delete. I mean seriously am I going to let someone from high school get me down? No way!

Speaking of happy endings, this is the end of Shia's Healthy New Lifestyle Tips for the Month.

Stay tuned for March Madness!

Shia's Healthy New Lifestyle Day 27

Healthy Walk

So the weather is sort of up and down at the moment, one day it's 80 and then the next it is 32. Okay 32 isn't miserable to most people living up north but for Florida that is pretty cold, plus downtown is on the river so it does get pretty breezy, but I've decided to start taking a healthy walk at lunch.

Top 10 Reasons to Walk (from Walk the Weight Away by RoseMarie Alfieri & Andrew Flach)

1) It's the most natural way to exercise.

2) Best starting point, even if you have never exercised, you'll be able to walk.

3) It doesn't cost anything.

4) Your walk time is for you to enjoy. You can mediate, listen to your fave music, or solve problems - whatever keeps you walking!

5) You can walk alone or with family and friends. (Okay alone if you are in a safe neighborhood)

6) It's safe, the possibility of injury is slim.

7) You can gradually build your fitness level.

8) Promotes overall wellness, which is nice knowing that you're doing some…

Sometimes it's healthy to just say NOOOOO....

There is seriously nothing I dread more than Girl Scout cookies. Let's face it, they are getting a bit pricey and there just so darn tasty that you can eat an entire box without realizing it. So yes, it's that dreaded time of year where they are outside every store pushing those cookies. An attorney here had his wife and daughter go around with her sheet asking for us all to buy cookies. At that point, how do you say no? I mean I know how it feels to be a kid hustling people for money to pay for summer camp or band stuff. So I always cave plus what is she like 7 years old. I'm not that heartless people. Granted I have no problem pretending not to hear them outside of the grocery store but come in my office with your sheet...I'm gonna buy something.

So now I have two boxes of those dang cookies in my desk. I had totally planned on giving them away. Then I come back from lunch and a co-worker left a box for me on…

Healthy Environment

I'm all for doing my part to help the environment. I recycle EVERYTHING that can be recycled, I use cloth bags for the grocery store, I drive a reasonably fuel efficient car and have taken many steps to decrease my carbon footprint. My absolute #1 thing that makes me mad about others here on this damaged planet needing our TLC is people that drive HUGE SUVs (just for show) with extreme hatred to those that drive Hummers. (What is worse than a Hummer? A Hummer Limo!!!!) So tonight after Inbetweeners, Paul and I were watching BBC America World News. We all know that GM has filed bankruptcy and with that they were going to sell off Hummer to another car company. Well it was announced last night that no other car company will be buying Hummer. SO NO MORE HUMMERS!!!! YAY! That is the best news I have heard in a while. Capitalist pigs 0 .... Earth 1! So if you drive a Hummer: 1) you suck and 2) don't plan on getting an updated version cuz there isn…

Improving Memory

Forgetting something can cause stress. You can't remember if you sent out your payment for a bill, you can't remember where you parked, you can't find your keys and you're in a rush, all of these and many more instances of forgetfulness can cause undo stress.
So here are some tips to improve your memory from

Pay attention. You can’t remember something if you never learned it, and you can’t learn something — that is, encode it into your brain — if you don’t pay enough attention to it. It takes about eight seconds of intent focus to process a piece of information through your hippocampus and into the appropriate memory center. So, no multitasking when you need to concentrate! If you distract easily, try to receive information in a quiet place where you won’t be interrupted. (I am soo…

Mayo Clinic

According to Mayo Clinic on Healthy Weight by Donald D. Hensrud, M.D., genes may set the stage for being overweight, but YOU ultimately decide whether or not you are going to be overweight. It has more to do with calorie intake and physical activity. If you eat more calories then you burn you're going to gain weight. A family history of obesity can increase your chances of being overweight by 30%. However, it doesn't mean that you are destined to be fat, your genes can just make it more susceptible to weight gain. "No matter what your genes say, it is ultimately your choices in nutrition and activity that will determine your weight."

This seriously is like a revelation to me. I have been totally convinced that I have been destined to be overweight because of overweight relatives, now I know! Sure I can lose weight, I've done it but it sneaks back on. It's just totally up to me. I've, of course, always known that eating right and exerc…

Sugar Sugar

So I've been watching this show, Ruby, on the Style channel. I am totally hooked. I wish Ruby all the luck in the world. She's been doing an amazing job and her show shows how in real life there are definitely ups and downs and bumps in the road and great moments of celebration. So, an episode I watched got me thinking about sugar. Sweet Tea is definitely a southern fave and Ruby's friend was doing it up Southern style with tons of sugar. I when is the last time I've had a drink with sugar in it. Practically forever! Sweet & Low is my pride and true. Which I'm currently trying to rely upon less and less. So if I've made a decision to not drink regular colas or sweet tea and stuck to it for so long what difference has it really made? Sure there aren't those wasted calories from drinking it, but has it affected my weight? I've had some ups and downs as it is. What's the "evil" if it's not sugar? …

Sick Day!

So I think all of the Valentine's Day food caught up to me. We had filet migon, king crab, strawberry shortcake, etc. Needless to say I was sick after that. I don't think it was anything to do with the food since Paul didn't get sick but hey at least it was a day home from work, cuddled up watching tv with my valentine. He even watched Keeping up with the Kardashians with me! (TWO EPISODES...believe me he was hooked)

Shia's Healthy New Lifestyle Day 14

Happy Valentine's Day!

So continuing our healthy soul chat...

According to what I found on google...researchers have found that emotions are a big part of your soul. For example, when we feel LOVE:

The stress responses in our bodies REVERSE in mere seconds! REVERSE!

The energy actually generated in our hearts (2.5 watts of power) goes from chaos to a harmonic pattern of waves.

The systems in our body functioning on their own start functioning together in a zen state of order and harmony.

So regardless if you have a special man or woman in your life, Valentine's Day can fill your heart as well. Love doesn't have to be Hallmark cookie cutter with flowers, chocolates and stuffed animals (OMG...I hate stuffed animals as gifts...what am I going to do with it...I am an adult [yes Taller I couldn't stop thinking about SNL!]) Back to my point, find love in numerous things. Love a piece of art, go see it or paint something like it. Love your pet, buy it some treats and s…

Healthy Soul

To be quiet frank, I am not a religious person and this is not a religious topic for me or this blog entry. So I'll just say that if you ARE religious and get your fulfillment in your religion. Keep it up and kudos to you, I'm of course not suggesting that anyone doesn't have a healthy soul, it's just tips to make it better just like all the body. [NOTE: No, I am not an atheist...I'm just not overly religious... it is my choice so please respect it like I respect yours for being religious (if you are, if not, I respect that too)] Now on that awkward note...

I've talked about healthy mind and nonstop about a healthy body so I was thinking...what is next? The soul. Honestly, I was like how does one get a "healthy soul"? Surely google will tell me 100s ways to get one and there's probably going to be one on sale on Ebay or Amazon (joking obviously). To my surprise, there isn't a lot of information out there. I'll share…

Shia's Healthy New Lifestyle Day 12

Healthy Mind

Here are some Healthy Tips I found online to improve mental health:

Build self confidence. Make a list of your strengths and build on them. Don't stress on your weaknesses embrace your strengths. Once you build confidence you'll see that you can conquer those weaknesses.

Learn to Accept Compliments. Accept positive thoughts from others. Appreciate and acknowledge the way others see you. It can also help in building confidence. We are so hard on ourselves. Try telling yourself what you would tell your best friend in her situation. You wouldn't tell her all bets are lost. So give yourself the same respect.

Create a Budget. Money woes can definitely bring on stress. Look to see what you are over-spending on and make a list of priority financial needs and make budgets for the miscellaneous. It's not as hard as it seems. This shopaholic can do it ... anyone can. Also make a realistic budget. Don't budget $0.00 for something when it's someth…

Shia's Healthy New Lifestyle Day 11

Yesterday this person showed me a Keep Calm and Carry On poster. As you can see from her blog I teased her about how cheesy it seemed. However, today she posted other posters. I went to the Etsy shop and found this one. I love it. It's totally me!

I think I'll make one of my own ... Be Zen and Grab a Pen!

Shia's Healthy New Lifestyle Day 10

The Best Medicine: Laughter

I've always been the kind of person to say something witty and to joke around. Once in middle school, I had a friend that told me that her mother didn't like me because I laugh too much. I was like really and LAUGHED! So I did a little search on the internet and found an article about laughing.

Apparently humor and laughter has tons of benefits:

Physical benefits
Boost immunity
Lowers stress hormones
Decreases Pain
Relaxes your muscles
Prevents heart disease

Mental Health Benefits
Adds joy and zest to life
Eases anxiety and fear
Relieves stress
Improves mood
Enhances resilience

Social Benefits
Strengthens relationships
Attracts others to us
Enhances teamwork
Helps defuse conflict
Promotes group bonding

I will have to admit that Monday was the best Monday I think I have ever had. There was just something to laugh about all day long. It really did help with trying to …

Shia's Healthy New Lifestyle Day 9

Healthy Relationships

I've always been someone to make sure I wasn't in a bad relationship with a guy. Believe me I wasn't always the one ready to call it quits right off the bat but I have been able to realize afterward and learned from my mistakes. I just have never and can't ever be someone that is treated badly by someone that I love and that is supposed to love me. With that said though, I've realized that I have a lot of unhealthy relationships with others.

With that said came my new mantra to be stress free at work. It really isn't the actual work that is stressful, sure there are deadlines and tons of stuff to get done, but it's really my interactions with others here. As I have previously stated, I just feel that there are tons of unhappy people here at work. I've been letting these people bring me down. So now I feel like I am in a bad relationship with coworkers and I've had to make steps to end these bad relationships. First off, …

Healthy Skin

So last year right before my 30th birthday I found a gray hair and I had a horrible zit, I literally said to the mirror... OMG pick a generation...old or young!! I often get a nasty under the skin pimple on my chin during that lovely time of the month. I have already been doing a few things to try to keep these pores unclogged. I started using: 1) Clean & Clear Deep Cleaning Astringent with 2% Salicylic Acid; 2) Biore Warming Anti-blackhead Cream with 2% Salicylic Acid or Biore Pore Unclogging Scrub with 2% Salicylic Acid stores often carry one or the other. There is really no difference except the warming one warms up when you rub it in also the warming one says it is for blackheads which isn't really the same as what I get but I think the warming does help bring the dirt up out of the pores. So since I've been using these products the number of flare ups I've had has seriously decreased. Well now I have gone one step further. I started using Bar…

Shia's Healthy New Lifestyle Day 7

So I've check out the Natural Health for Women by Beth McEoin and I have found loads of helpful tips. So today is all about healthy self without OTC medication. I suffer from sinus headaches often. I had a really bad one last week. It literally felt like my eye was about to burst. So when I went to look through the book I turned directly to natural treatments for sinusitis it was like I heard angels singing...ahhhhh when I read the page. Common symptoms of sinusitis is pain that settles above or below the eyes and around the cheekbones; recurrent headaches with a tired feeling around the eyes. This doesn't seem so bad when I type it but believe me it is agony. Oh btw...sometimes OTC medicines work and sometimes I take tons of them and NOTHING ... PAIN! However, the OTC meds will raise your blood pressure so it's really not good for me to have to take it twice a day or even two days in a row. So when I found these natural treatments you can now understand my enthu…

Shia's Healthy New Lifestyle Day 6

Library Day

So as I've said before I would love to write a book or even have a column in a magazine or newspaper so anywho I guess this is why I have the blog. I am sort of determined to write my self help book which is the whole reason I have been doing these healthy tips blogs so in an effort to keep the blog interesting I made a trip to the library. The trip was for two reasons: 1) my book on CD ended and there's no way I'd be stress free next week without another book on CD. The radio seems to bring on road rage for me. My drives are MUCH more peaceful if I am listening to a good book. My commute is pretty long and the books make it tolerable, instead of dreading the drive to work or home I'm looking forward to finding out what's happening next in my book. So I had a brilliant idea...why not get a book on CD for work...maybe that will help ease the stress of work. It works for road rage so what about work rage? 2) to check out self-help healthy/diet bo…

Okay I am posting this to brag....January spending...I had a budget and drum was MET! YAY! Seriously were there categories of overages, yes unfortunately..HOWEVER...there were categories that were under...HOLLA! So budgeting takes serious effort and control on my part however I think I have proven to myself that YES I, Shia Shopaholic, can save cizash (that is ghetto for CASH, sometimes I wonder if my mom has any idea of what I am talking about on (mom that means laugh out loud))! I have my notebook all geared up for February and so far we're off to a good start. Seriously though, when I am rich and diving into my money like Scrooge McDuck never fear I won't forget about you blog will always be here. (Taller did you just groan...yes more WORDS to come!)

Shia's Healthy New Lifestyle Day 5

Misery loves company...

So my new healthy lifestyle needs to yield to more positive and happy thoughts. It seems like I am surrounded by ignorance, drama and misery at work. I really let it take a toll on me...hence the sleeping issues. I really try to be zen about it but you don't understand (ok Taller you do) I feel like I work with some of the most miserable and intolerable people on the planet. I've tried repeating to myself...I will not get mad ... I will not get mad...sometimes it works and sometimes I get sucked right in. Workplace misery definitely doesn't end when I leave work. When I come home I am in no mood to deal with pet issues, Paul issues, food issues, whatever. It's basically like once I get home ... I AM DONE! However, this week I've pedaled away on the exercise bike every night and left work at the door upon arrival. My mood at home these past 5 nights has really been nice. I had some major work drama a few days ago and I think Paul wa…

Shia's Healthy New Lifestyle Day 3 and 4

Day 3 and 4 and no food log yet. Never fear this weekend I will figure out this crisis!

However, as for day three and four, things are going quiet well. I'm not going to lie and say that this week has been super organized and going off without a hitch. This week has been complete chaos. CHAOS I tell you! So with that said, I am happy to report that I have exercised every night this week and I have been making all around good food choices and I've even had to eat out due to the chaos.

Honestly, when I first started this week I thought it's all good, I got this and didn't do much in the ways of preparation. So because of that I feel like I wouldn't have had to worry about being healthy on top of everything else going on if I had a Plan B, C, D, etc. So this weekend there will be tons of preparation for next week. TONS!

So with being bum-bared with stress emotional eating could sneak in. Eating a whole bag of Doritos because your just at that brink of not c…

Shia's Healthy New Lifestyle Day 2

Last night (even though I left work at 7:30 and got home at 8:00 pm) I worked out. We recently got an exercise bike which is currently sitting in our living room in front of the tv. So I pedaled my way along 5 miles while I sat and watched tv. It was quiet a workout. At one point I had it up to 20 mph. So this is now my nightly routine and no need to get all worked up about having to get to the gym and work out.

Don't fret dear followers, food logs are coming. I just can't figure out how to post them. Scan my book it's a pdf, type it up in microsoft or excel and blog here freaks out. Take a picture? Well...I haven't gotten my new camera has been ordered ... so boo. However, I will figure something out!

*Shia Redemption Correction*

I remembered this last night before I went to for jerko #1 I actually saw him after I had lost all of the weight from doing Weight Watchers and he asked for my phone number so I gave him the one digit off then it was even more hilarious to see him at Halloween ... fat and "unattractive" perhaps not having my phone number drove him to the Ben and Jerry's =)

Day 1 Shia's Healthy New Lifestyle

So I have my starting weight and today hasn't really started off on the right foot.

I ate breakfast so there's a positive. My lunch however was accidentally left at home sitting on the counter and then my boss came in right at lunch time so I wasn't able to leave. So lunch became a smoothie from Starbucks and a granola bar I had in my desk which is better than nothing and better than nasty fast food. So I plan on redeeming myself for dinner tonight. Chicken Breast cutlet and veggies (either a salad or some of the frozen stuff I have in the freezer or both)

The tip for today I guess is planning ahead can often backfire so have a plan B. Thank goodness I had that granola bar in my desk and the smoothie was really filling with all that protein. However, tomorrow is a new day and I will be better prepared.

Here's are my goal ranges for each day:

Fat/day 33-42
Protein/day 40-70
Carbs/day 100-225
Fiber/day 25-35
Calories/day 1300
