How to Buy a Hermès’ Birkin Bag

So the Birkin Bag...it is the holy grail of handbags...every woman wants one?...but can you really get one? and why do celebrities have so many?

Well we've all heard of the 6 year waiting list and I just saw an article on the Huffington Post stating that there is a 2 year waiting period.  So which one is it?

Well according to Michael Tonello, who wrote a tell all book "Bringing Home the Birkin" says that he found the secret.  Apparently if you walk off the street into Hermes and ask to buy a Birkin, you are going to be told...I'm sorry..there's a waiting list...blah blah blah.  BUT if you walk in wearing a Hermes scarf, Hermes jewelry and carrying a Hermes tote and then you decide to buy more of their smaller items...chances are you are walking out with a Birkin.  Tonello said that he would see salespeople walk up to customers that were purchasing multiple items and tell them that they had an extra on site...someone was on the waiting list and cancelled (AS IF!) and then bam...it is theirs or just ask now for a Birkin with your pile of stuff and you're walking out with one when they just told you none were available.

So is this why celebrities can buy so many.  Mail Online reported that Kim Kardashian spent $100,000 at Hermes in Paris last September and she apparently has a rainbow of colors. Victoria Beckam apparently has the biggest Birkin bag collection.

So to me it seems like this whole Birkin being the holy grail is bs.  Sure it's exclusive...to those that have the money to spend.. but it's not like your handbag is being handmade for you and that's why you are waiting for 2 years to get it.  Chances are it's sitting in the back room of the shop waiting for the right time for it to be yours.  Spend a little more and you can have it today...if not...you have to wait.

So what do you think?  Do you want a Birkin and would you spend extra on smaller items to get it right away?  Do you think their policy is sneaky?

  1. I would love to have a Birkin, really they´re adorable, but I would love more to spend my hard-earned money for a house deposit than trying to have a taste of exclusivity. Perhaps later, when I get a chance to pose nude for a big brand ;)

  2. ooo I really like that you did a piece on this AND called them on their possible bs. I tend to agree with you. I had only ever heard of the waiting lists and thats that but it would not surprise me at all that buy the right stuff and be wearing some of their stuff and BANG, you miracously jumped to first on teh waiting list. I have never seen the hype around them (I think there only is a hype because of a hype...if that makes sense?) I do love a good staple/classic handbag and these sure fit that mould, I just would never pay that high a price tag for a bag! Money rich or not :) Great post.

  3. This reminds me of the Sex In The City episode where Samantha snakes Lucy Liu's Birkin. (At least I think that's who it was. Honestly, the bag does nothing for me. I think the policy is a way of drawing hype. Most people want what they can't have.

  6. I like the Birkin bag but I'd never get one (Not that I could afford it!). Celebrities probably get sent the bags by PR companies anyway! xx

  7. I would totally love to get a Kelly some day (never understood the hand carry handles on the Birkin). The wait list depends on the color and material. But you can definitely walk in and get a Birkin at a regular boutique.

I've read that VB's Birkin collection is worth $2m. Wow. Yes I could buy a house with that money (though not a big one if you were in major cities).

  9. I would love one, but the scarf takes a lot of craftsmanship to make. Also, celebs get stuff for free because it advertises their goods.

  10. Eh, I'll pass on the bag. I'm not big on expensive accessories (I say this because I am broke.) I don't let myself even hope! haha

  11. Andrea...I love your mantra! I am broke therefore I do not want! Great way to not stay broke forever!

Elle...I wonder why Kim K didn't have the hook up and had to pay $100,000 not celebrity enough for Hermes...hmmmm

I totally agree...those scarves are pieces of art work. Check out chicncheapliving.blogspot.com

  12. Guess the 'hard to get' rule always works. Have you seen the Birkin-printed canvas tote from 'Thursday Friday'? I thought it was brilliant and hilarious at the same time. xoxo

  14. I don't understand the hype about the Birkin AT ALL. There are a thousand bags I'd rather buy before I even considered it. The supposed exclusivity obviously keeps it popular.

  16. I couldn't even afford a Birkin alone! So if I had to buy more stuff I'd be totally ruined! Aside from that I like the Mulberry Bayswater better anyway as classic, basic bag...

  17. Sorcha - you are so right...I can think of tons bags I would buy before that one!

Punctuation Marks - are we talking stock market investments? It seems it would take forever at this rate since it keeps dropping...lol

Nimue - I agree...it's enough to think about paying for the bag now you want me to buy WHAT? MORE?!?

Thank all of you that commented today...feel free to follow me if you haven't yet...you'd hate to miss out on what craziness I'll post next =)
