Reverse Clothes Hanger Trick

Wednesday, January 16, 2013

So in case you haven't read yet, my new year's resolution is to be more organized at home. So I thought I would share with you a little trick I found online for getting rid of unwanted clothes.  It is easy enough for anyone to do, you hang all your clothes up with the hangers reversed.  Anytime you wear something, wash it, it goes back with the hanger normal.  After a few months (3 to 6 months), whatever clothes that are still on a  backwards hanger - DONATE THEM!! I have 3 months calendared but go for 6 months if you live somewhere cold and obviously aren't going to be wearing any of your summer stuff anytime soon.

No cheating though, if you put something on from a backwards hanger and decide not to wear it, hang it back up backwards because you didn't wear it!

I'll update you with my results in about three months.  I'm not expecting a tremendous amount of stuff to donate because I am pretty good about donating my unwanted clothes.  Also, right before I reversed all my  hangers I did another sweep.  However, there are those items that I THINK I want but then never really end up wearing them.  You know the ones, you put it on then it comes right off and ends up on the floor.  So chances are those will probably be the ones that finally get the boot!

What's your trick?  Have you tried this?

  1. Thats a creative tip. I need to do that as well. Last week my church heads up a big clothes drive and i was able to come up with 4 big bags stuffed to the brim pretty quickly. Now i need to do your trick to see if i really am going to wear what i think i will.

    1. Thanks! I love the idea of donating because it makes you feel good for helping someone in need but also it helps to know that someone will be super excited for the items themselves. During that last sweep, I went through all my purses and tossed some of them in the donation bags - fab outfits will need accessories!! I wonder if there is somewhere to donate beauty items .... hmmmm. Going to check that out!

  2. We've never heard of this trick but it's a good one to see what you are wearing and what you are not.

    1. Thanks! I'm glad I could inspire you. I'm a little obsessed with my closet having matching hangers, etc - it just makes you feel so good when you open it and you're surrounding by stuff you love rather than ... not this ... not this ... not this....Good Luck!!

  5. Ok this is a test - I've been told I am a no reply blogger - so I am testing to see what happens when I comment on my blog. I've made some changes in google+ and my old profile ... will it work? Who knows but here it goes!

  6. I still can't reply to the comment your left on my blog via email. Go to your profile settings. There is a box to add your email. :) Hope that helps. And this hanger trick is such a great idea. I have been known to use it a time or two. :)

  9. That is such a smart idea! I am terrible with parting with my clothes, even if I haven't worn them in forever so maybe this would work for me :)

    1. It is hard to let go of certain items ~ you got it on mad sale ~ it was the hype of the season ~ believe me I already have a feeling about what will be backwards still in the end and I'll have to rip the bandaid off and finally get rid of them. Stay tuned for my update in three months! Good luck to you with your closet!

  10. I love being organized. haha! It's one of my favorite things to do. My closet is definitely in need of a little spring cleaning, but for the most part, I keep it color-coordinated and by item- like jackets together, tops together, etc. I also think it's great to go through and donate clothes you don't wear much. It feels pretty good to clean out too! I know, OCD :)

    1. There is something to be said about a fab closet though. You just feel like a movie star when everything looks so organized and pretty. I haven't gotten around to the color-coordination yet but I do have my stuff separated by sweaters, tops, pants, skirts, jeans, etc. Oh and I am truly obsessed about hangers matching. Seriously I have tons of posts about hangers. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!!

  11. I just started this a month ago! My closet is over-organized (truth be told), but I have way too much stuff! I hold onto everything foreverrrr - hopefully this will help me kick that habit! :)

  12. That’s an interesting trick indeed! If you think your old, but still in good condition, clothes are becoming outmoded or less appealing to your eyes, it probably is the time you dispose of them. Not to throw them straight to the bin, but to donate them to those who need them at the moment.
